OnlineHost:     Ruth Sil has entered the room.

JES No Time:    hit it Maggie

Madav1:     Host Lyric, are we ready to begin?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    yes, please do Maggie

OnlineHost:     Suspensewriter has entered the room.

LittCrazy:  Maggie, i enjoyed The Last Male Virgin. Very Funny

Madav1:     Thanks Litt, this is the book that's been optioned

OnlineHost:     Luv2write has entered the room.

Madav1:     where's Host Lyric?

LittCrazy:  Woohoo! it will make a great film

HOST WPLC Lyric:    I'm here, maggie, please feel free to start

BrownDvs:   Is that a comedy?

Suspensewriter:     Madav, what studio?

Madav1:     OK - Lyric says to start.  The title of this evenings session has

been "How to Sell To the Movies"

OnlineHost:     Ruth Sil has left the room.

Madav1:     I can tell you how I did it once, with a TV movie, and the feature

film option I have now

HOST WPLC Dee R:    love that title!!1

Madav1:     You can break in with questions

Lera al:    ?

Madav1:     Let me start with the current movie option, because there's more

"How To"

Madav1:     involved

Madav1:     Lera GA

OnlineHost:     KeytapperTwo has entered the room.

Lera al:    sorry...I'll wait for maggie to get started...ga

OnlineHost:     pvogelbacher has left the room.

Madav1:     Suspense THE LAST MALE VIRGIN has been optioned for feature film

development

Madav1:     by Ruddged Land LLC in partnership with National Lampoon

Suspensewriter:     Thanks, Maggie

BrownDvs:   Okay well that answers my previous q.

Madav1:     National Lampoon made Animal House and the National Lampoon
vacation

movies

OnlineHost:     Kathi Smith 116 has entered the room.

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Keytapper, can IM tonight's session info...will email it.

Suspensewriter:     Yes, very good, Maggie

Madav1:     OK - what's an "option" ?

Madav1:     well it means an independent producer gets an exclusive right

Madav1:     to the book while the producer tries to sign up a "bankable"
star, a

good director and a screenwriter

Padremigel:     Only independents?  Studios don't do that?

Madav1:     when this is done, the indie producer goes to a studio to see if
he

can get financing and distribution

Suspensewriter:     Studios do that

Madav1:     then he starts the movie

OnlineHost:     KeytapperTwo has left the room.

BrownDvs:   Question!

Madav1:     Padre yes, studios to do that

SteeIBtrfl:     Maggie - how long is the option for and how much is it held
for?

Madav1:     The majority of options never turn into movies

Madav1:     Steel an option is usually for six months or a year

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Adam, you can just jump in with your question...

Madav1:     the producer puts down some money

Suspensewriter:     Maggie, I don't want you to get swamped with too many
questi

BrownDvs:   Do you still get to be creative consultant during the film-making

process?

Madav1:     questions?  These people are very excited about THE LAST MALE
VIRGIN

SteeIBtrfl:     can you share with us what it was on this book? (amount of
time

and option front money)?

Suspensewriter:     ons but what percent is the option of the final shoot
quote?

Madav1:       and a big agency, International Creative Management, ICM, is

acting as agents

Madav1:     Steel it wasn't in the six figures

Madav1:     Suspense I don't understand you.

JES No Time:    How do you know if they aren't going to make the movie, do
they

tell you, or do you have to wait until the option expires?

Madav1:     Want to know how this happened?

OnlineHost:     DianeFarr has entered the room.

Suspensewriter:     Maggie - do you get a quote on both the option and then
how

much if they shoot it?

Madav1:     JES usually when the option expires.  But I kept getting option

renwals with different people with my TV movie  A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE,

Madav1:     CBS Sunday Night Movie, 1994, starring Olivia Newton John

JES No Time:    Do you have to agree to the renewal?

Madav1:     it took three years - Dolly Parton turned it down,  Reba McIntyre

turned it down, so did Amy Grant

OnlineHost:     LutNe3 has entered the room.

Madav1:     Suspense, let's get off the money track - I thought the room was

interested in how to sell to the movies

BrownDvs:   I repeat: Do you still get to be creative consultant during the

film-making process?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    guys questions are okay, but lets let Maggie get her story

out first, k?

Suspensewriter:     Maggie, in other words, let's say they offer you X number
of

dollars for the option--do they also offer a different figure in the event

they shoot it?

OnlineHost:     Fjm3eyes has entered the room.

JES No Time:    Good point Sry

Suspensewriter:     that's all I'm asking

Madav1:     NO Brown - I tired, but my agent said sit down and don't make
waves.

I should have been tougher.  There was a lot of "dumbing down"

Madav1:     in the TV script

Lera al:    Maggie, was it your idea to sell as a movie, or your agent?

BrownDvs:   That must have sucked. Okay, that's what I wanted to know.

Madav1:     Suspense  The option money is money down - the purchase price is a

different matter

Suspensewriter:     Okay, thanks, Maggie

Madav1:     Lera - with the TV movie, which is still running at Christmas time

on Lifetime TV (cable)

Madav1:     it was my young agent who sold the movie

OnlineHost:     pvogelbacher has entered the room.

Lera al:    thanks

Madav1:     I had just come to him from another agent, and he didn't get any

money on the deal

Madav1:     but he was peddling his new writers in Hollywood, and the agent

there was interested in the idea behind A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE

HOST WPLC Lyric:    Guys, let's give Maggie a chance to tell her story in
order

Madav1:     he asked for a "story treatment"

Madav1:     which is nothing more than an outline

Madav1:     since I had just finished the book I had one LOL

Madav1:     I sent him my outline

Madav1:     But it was three years before the movie deal jelled

Madav1:     when it did - everything moved fast.  They shot SCR in Vancouger
in

November and it was aired the first week in Dec

DianeFarr:  did they option it right away?

BrownDvs:   That's actually not too bad Madav.

Madav1:     I visited the set - which I understand is out of the ordinary

because they don't usually let the book author on the set

Lera al:    Why not?

BrownDvs:   lol, ya don't say

Madav1:     Diane the option was three years earlier for A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE

Madav1:     Lera, apparently they've had some bad experiences

RBOZO55:    Sorry Dee, I'll add you to my list

HOST WPLC Dee R:    thank you.

Lera al:    Did you have any contact wwith the screen writer?

Madav1:     with authors raising hell about the changes.  I could see mine
were

awful, but there was nothing I could do about it

Madav1:     Lera - no.  But I did see the first script and it was terrible.

Everybody had a part in it

Lera al:    I can understand that...I'd be mad if someone tried to change my

baby!

Madav1:     they bought a romantic comedy and tried to turn it into a soap
opera

Lera al:    oi!

SteeIBtrfl:     Maggie - what was different with your second sale - the curre
nt

one?

BrownDvs:   Same here Lera.

Madav1:     fortunately, while I was visiting the set I gave everybody a copy
of

the book, and Gregory Harrison asked for more comedy - which they did

OnlineHost:     CuteSheBearCub has entered the room.

OnlineHost:     PHeeren has entered the room.

DianeFarr:  Someone famous (as usual, I forget who) was asked once if he got

upset when Hollywood ruined his books. He said, "No. They haven't ruined my

books. My books are right there." (pointing to shelf)

Madav1:     when you see the film on TV, those funny scenes are Harrison's -
he

is a great admirer of Cary Grant, he told me

BrownDvs:   A bold move on your part Maggie.

Madav1:     Brown I also sent the tech people and the stars big bouquets of

flowers

OnlineHost:     Rdpelleg has left the room.

BrownDvs:   Ahhh, a nice touch.

Madav1:     the location was horrible - rain and mud, and the flowers helped

Madav1:     Newton-John came out of her trailer and let me take pictures of
her\

Lera al:    Still, it sounds exciting, Maggie

Madav1:     with me

HOST WPLC Lyric:    well, isn't that the least she could do?

Madav1:     visit my web site
www.maggiedavis.com and you can see them

HOST WPLC Lyric:    great!

SteeIBtrfl:     Maggie - what was different with your second sale - the
current

one?

BrownDvs:   That's the way I see it Lyric.

Madav1:     OK - want to go to how we sold the option?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    yes, please tell us

AttyBBlack:     yes

BrownDvs:   go for it

PHeeren:    by all means, yes

G1ft0fgabn0t:   please do

OnlineHost:     Rdpelleg has entered the room.

Madav1:     actually, it was born of desperation.  I have an agent in NY you
has

over 100 clients and like most NY agents isn't really clued into the

Hollywood film scene

Madav1:     who has I mean

Madav1:     well, a friedn of mine was going to the Novelists Ink conference
in

NY last September (a good one)

Madav1:     and I couldn't make it, I was workin on a book.

Rdpelleg:   I am sort of confused, did you have to go the production? I

thought after the writer signs

Rdpelleg:   off the rights

Rdpelleg:   your business is finished

Madav1:     So I asked her to take the "flats" (covers) of THE LAST MALE
VIRGIN

Padremigel:     flats?  covers?

Madav1:     RD{elleg what book are we talking about?

Madav1:     Padre the flats are the covers they give you before they're bound

into a book

OnlineHost:     Chipper1840 has left the room.

Padremigel:     ahhh like galleys.  Gallies?

Rdpelleg:   Didn't one of your stories go on screen?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    Renee you missed that part.  yes, she has nothing to do

with the production once she sold

Rdpelleg:   oh okay

PHeeren:    are literary agents reputable 100% the time? I did write one agent

a letter asking her to let her know that i am interested in submitting the

kids' story but i later found out that she was a bad agent, you know.

Suspensewriter:     Rd is asking what happens after you sign over the rights,

Maggie

Madav1:     now the NINK conference had a panel of three movie people - one
was

the movie person for Rugged Land, one was with Sony Pictures and one, Kathy

Yoneda, was a freelance agent

HOST WPLC Lyric:    okay, Maggie please go on

Rdpelleg:   that is what I thought

SarahStNy:  no they aren't Tom

Rdpelleg:   When someone started to ask about Olivia Newton John

DianeFarr:  hey, let her finish! :)

OnlineHost:     SPultz has left the room.

Rdpelleg:   I was thrown off

PHeeren:    sorry I asked a stupid ? about literary agents

Rdpelleg:   sorry

Madav1:     Suspense - you don't sign over the right to your book, you sign a

contract allowing the movies people to make a film of it.  In most cases you

have no cntrol over what they do with the story

Madav1:     That was my case with A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE

DianeFarr:  ok, ok, we're in the room with the three movie people ... go on

...

Suspensewriter:     Okay, thanks, Maggie

HOST WPLC Lyric:    okay, if Maggie doesn't get a chance, we're going to

protocol

Madav1:     PHeeren, can I answer about agents later?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    actually, we're on protocol now

SarahStNy:  about time Lyric

HOST WPLC Lyric:    type ? or ! if you want to ask a question

G1ft0fgabn0t:   thank you Sry

SarahStNy:  go for it

pvogelbacher:   thanks lyric

HOST WPLC Lyric:    it was guests preference, Janice

HOST WPLC Lyric:    ga Maggie

Madav1:     OK - my friend, who is a romance writer, approached the three
movie

people, handed them the covers

Madav1:     and made a "pitch"

OnlineHost:     Omalleywriter has entered the room.

OnlineHost:     Lera al has left the room.

Madav1:     that is, she told them a little bit about the story and how it
would

make a good movie, after the panel

Madav1:     Kathy Yoneda, in her book, calls this an "elevator" pitch

Madav1:     you catch them in the evelator, the men's room, etc

Madav1:     any questions?

DianeFarr:  which one bought?

SteeIBtrfl:     ?

Madav1:     Diane nobody's bought anything yet, just an option

PHeeren:    yes

OnlineHost:     Omalleywriter has left the room.

Madav1:     I already said, Rugged Land

PHeeren:    pls do

Madav1:     anyway, they were nice, but nobody got back to me.  So I did a

:follow through"

OnlineHost:     Kathiegolson has entered the room.

Madav1:     that is, I got the names and addresses of the panel members and
sent

them the BOOK

Madav1:     about six week later I heard from the firector of film development

for Rugged Land, who loved the book and wanted to option it

Madav1:     by e-mail -

Padremigel:     Hope you get them cheap, mad

Madav1:     you can imagine my thoughts when I looked at that e-mail

HOST WPLC Lyric:    lol

DianeFarr:  lol

pvogelbacher:   sweet day

G1ft0fgabn0t:   Hooya :)

pvogelbacher:   lol

Madav1:     I signed an option agreement, now they are looking for -

BrownDvs:   :-)

Madav1:     guess what>

Madav1:     a bankable star, a good director, and a screenwriter

TheUsurpKing:   lol

DianeFarr:  sheesh

OnlineHost:     Daring Nymph2 has entered the room.

Madav1:     and I am waiting.

HOST WPLC Lyric:    ?

Madav1:     But in her boo, one of the panel members advises you to do JUST
THIS

CuteSheBearCub:     ?

Madav1:     go to a conference, pin somebody connected with the movie biz -
and

give them the "elevator pitch"

OnlineHost:     MMcIl78 has entered the room.

Madav1:     OK - that's the bare bones - in once isnatnces a Hollywood agent

liked the idea over the telephone

Madav1:     in another, I had a good friend (the shyest person in the world,

incidentally)

Madav1:     who went to bat for me

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Steel, Sry and CuteSheBearCub ...is line up on
questions...

Madav1:     Yeah Cute

Madav1:     Cute?

OnlineHost:     Nightblue has entered the room.

CuteSheBearCub:     Ever think about applying for the position as screen
writer

for your story?

Kathiegolson:   Hello everyone

HOST WPLC Lyric:    Actually, sTeel was first, after Cute, Steel please ask

your question

SteeIBtrfl:     Did your romance writer friend have a 'treatment' to hand them

too after the pitch?

SteeIBtrfl:     ga

OnlineHost:     SusanIs has entered the room.

Madav1:     Cute I have tried writing screen plays and I think I can do it.
My

nephew graduated from UCLA film school

Madav1:     and has already sold a script

Fjm3eyes:   Hi Kathie

Madav1:     but I like the format of books

HOST WPLC Dee R:    hi Kathi...on protocol right now...:-)

Madav1:     and I would hate to have to make changes, changes, the way they do

to s script

Kathiegolson:   hello TheUsurpKing, Fjm3eyes, and Dee

OnlineHost:     SusanIs has left the room.

XCOALMINER84:   !

Madav1:     I suggest Brendan Fraser,  Matthew McConaughey or Brad Pitt as the

male lead

HOST WPLC Lyric:    steel please repost your question

Madav1:     and they seemed to think that was reasonable

HOST WPLC Lyric:    we're on protocol gang

Madav1:     that is, that they could approach them

SteeIBtrfl:     Did your romance writer friend have a 'treatment' to hand them

too after the pitch?

SteeIBtrfl:     ga

Madav1:     No Steel - just as I told you, it was a verbal pitch, followed by
a

"follow-through"\

SteeIBtrfl:     thank you

SteeIBtrfl:     ga

Madav1:     of the book a few weeks later when I didn't hear from anybody

OnlineHost:     Nightblue has left the room.

Madav1:     usually people on a panel shy aware from papers thrust at them

HOST WPLC Lyric:    okay, Cute stole my question so I'll ask another since I'm

next

CuteSheBearCub:     sorry

OnlineHost:     Daring Nymph2 has left the room.

HOST WPLC Lyric:    did you bargain for more input in this film this time

around Maggie?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    ga

Madav1:     actually, it's a comedy, and a good one,  Ruygged Land was very

impressed with what they call it's "commercial" quality

Madav1:     because comedies are hot now

HOST WPLC Dee R:    ?

Madav1:     Cute - my pleasure

HOST WPLC Lyric:    so will you be able to have input maggie?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    did you negotiate that this time around?  ga

SteeIBtrfl:     ?

Madav1:     I recommend writing conferences

Madav1:     faceto face is invaluable

Madav1:     Steel?

SteeIBtrfl:     What is the commercial price difference between a TV movie
sale

and a feature film sale?

SteeIBtrfl:     ga

Madav1:     Steel I would say the TV sale would be a little cheaper

SteeIBtrfl:     ?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    If not then Donna is next

HOST WPLC Lyric:    Donna please post your question

HOST WPLC Dee R:    You've written books, and someone else writes the script.

Have you considered writing original scripts? Is that a different way of

writing?

Madav1:     stars in Hollywood now are getting (Reese witherspoon ) 20 mil a

picture

HOST WPLC Dee R:    ga

DianeFarr:  (and you!)

OnlineHost:     Nightblue has left the room.

Madav1:     is there a que?  please come forward now - Lyric, want to go to

protocol?

XCOALMINER84:   I have a treatment being looked at now and I was wondering
what

the odds were

XCOALMINER84:   1st time

XCOALMINER84:   anybody know?

Madav1:     Diane I am not movie actress, I'm a writer  LOL

XCOALMINER84:   slim?

Madav1:     XCoal may the Force be with you.  It's a crap shoot

XCOALMINER84:   thought so

Madav1:     Next?

pvogelbacher:   lyric

HOST WPLC Lyric:    steel ga

SteeIBtrfl:     Maggie - do you think the process will be the same from your

perspective?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    You've written books, and someone else writes the

script...Have you considered writing original scripts?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Is that a different way of writing?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    ga

Madav1:     What process Steel?

SteeIBtrfl:     the option to sale process

SteeIBtrfl:     is there any difference that you have noted?

SteeIBtrfl:     ga

HOST WPLC Dee R:    sorry...Maggie/Steel...but I've asked same question

twice...lol

Madav1:     Steel, yes they have six months to renew the option of buy

Madav1:     next?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    Donna is next

CuteSheBearCub:     ?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    can you scroll up, Maggie...don't think I can type it

again...

Madav1:     GA

OnlineHost:     Kivrin Angel has left the room.

HOST WPLC Lyric:    HOST WPLC Dee R:  You've written books, and someone else

writes the script...Have you considered writing original scripts?

OnlineHost:     RBOZO55 has left the room.

Madav1:     I'll saty as long as you want to ask questions

HOST WPLC Lyric:    that's the question, Maggie

Madav1:     Donna?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    You've written books, and someone else writes the

script...Have you considered writing original scripts?
HOST WPLC DeeR: Is that a different way of writing?

MMcIl78:    How long would it be for an publsiher to read my novel .They have

had it a week and no wordIf a publisher does notpublish does he lose all

rights to the story even if he has edited it???

Madav1:     OK, Cute?

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Dee = Donna

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Or am I invisible?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    here one more time is the question maggie

HOST WPLC Lyric:    HOST WPLC Dee R:  You've written books, and someone else

writes the script...Have you considered writing original scripts?

Madav1:     Some publishers say it takes a year for an unagented manuscript to

be read

Madav1:     some say i month

Madav1:     MM I can't say.  If a publisher has edited your MS I presume you

have a contract

Madav1:     Lyric, - who is next?

HOST WPLC Lyric:    cute, ga

CuteSheBearCub:     What do the movie people normally pay for an option of six

months?

CuteSheBearCub:     ga

Madav1:     Cute it can range from $5,000 to $500,000

Madav1:     normally I would say $10,000

G1ft0fgabn0t:   ?

Madav1:     G1 GA

HOST WPLC Dee R:    Am I invisible...please someone recognize the sad and

DianeFarr:  lol

JES No Time:    I see you Donna

CuteSheBearCub:     Hi, Dee -- I recognize you.

G1ft0fgabn0t:   First Donna - Dee

Madav1:     GA

Kathiegolson:   $10,000.00 that is if they like it or if they retain it for a

possiable script

DianeFarr:  Heck, let's ALL ask it in unison!

HOST WPLC Lyric:    HOST WPLC Dee R:  You've written books, and someone else

writes the script...Have you considered writing original scripts?

G1ft0fgabn0t:   She also asked if scripts are different to write

HOST WPLC Dee R:    lol

pvogelbacher:   lol

G1ft0fgabn0t:   did i get that wrong?

G1ft0fgabn0t:   lol

DianeFarr:  One ... two ... three ... Have you considered writing original

scripts? <G>

JES No Time:    lol

BrownDvs:   lol

Madav1:     Kathie a ten thousand dollar down payment is to hold exclusive

rights to your book for a specified time - say six months, while they try to

get a "package" together
